All true.
But it's all been said a thousand times before in a thousand different ways.
What's the point anymore?
(Anonymous) on August 28th, 2011 10:55 pm (UTC)
Whats the point?
I agree. It is pointless. The Borders "brand" has been soiled, and soon it will be in a landfill somewhere.

As well-formatted and articulate as this article is, it's pure Yellow Journalism. Talk about a vulture devouring carrion! This person is a hundred times worse than any of the non-loyal customers currently picking the bones, because his task was to opportunistically increase enmity toward everything about the company. And as 'well within his rights' as he is, it is entirely ethical to condemn a company when there were as many decent competent people involved in its history as bad incompetent ones. Where's the journalistic integrity in turning a blind eye to honoring the art of bookselling or the lasting connections made between good employees and good customers?

I agree with most of it, but the author seems like an ass. "Consultants" are a dime a dozen.

If, by a dime, you mean hundreds of thousands of dollars, of course.

That was just some geezer's blog entry.
There is anecdotal support for the finding which that Borders had problems with brand recognition, as well as a common sense explanation for the phenomenon. America is one of the world's biggest countries and national (as opposed to regional) bookstore chains here were really few prior to the expansion of what would become the two largest.
The culprit in the loyalty factor insinuated early in the blog entry can only have been George Jones, if only because we couldn't -- certainly, cannot -- turn back from the reduction in titles carried that he oversaw. What differentiated us from competitors (real or construed) was disputed, he prevailed, and all, ultimately, was lost.

Maybe everything that's happened was our New Coke moment and now that the brand is gone - Borders Classic.

I move for a WaldenBooks Classic. :P

Borders killed the Waldenbooks
As a longtime Walden Books employee, I think Borders killed the Walden name with their inept micro-managing.

Re: Borders killed the Waldenbooks
No truer words. Our store, our whole district was profitable. We didn't just make plan; we actually contributed profit to the Walden Book Company, Inc. Then "BSR" was created and ruined everything.
(Anonymous) on August 31st, 2011 07:57 pm (UTC)
Re: Borders killed the Waldenbooks
Profit or not, they were both failed 'get rich quick' schemes whose proprietors didn't give two shits about the employees (or customers for that matter). Profit or not, it all went down the toilet, as everything does, so who cares? So go suck on a tail pipe and leave us all to wallow in the wreckage in silence.

Re: Borders killed the Waldenbooks
Correct. Walden was the better run company for years. They knew how to run stores and make money. The Borders side never understood what retailing was. Borders need to expand killed Walden along with poor upper management in the later years. For years the Borders expansion was fueled by Walden profits.

Then came RETEK which literally choked Walden to death. This repln system was forced down the throat of Walden by inept upper management who did not have a clue about managing product flow. The massive store closings in the mid 2000's were a direct result of RETEK. Product flow literally stopped for a while and this system never worked properly. With reduced inventory in the stores, sales fell off fast and hard. So no more excess money coming in to prop up the Borders side.

As management panicked about the bottom line numbers they again looked to Walden and it's expiring leases and began closing stores as leases came up. So those who were saying "my store made money it should not be closing" were 100% correct. It became a desperation move. Most stores were closed by lease renewal date and not by profitability.

So yes Borders killed Walden. And yes Walden was better managed than Borders. Borders were not stores they were libraries which worked for Tom and Louis Borders & store #1. Too bad Borders in later years never could grasp the merging of the Borders brothers hippie vision with true retailing.

Our pre-RETEK neg list went from 1-3 pages to 35-50 pages afterward...and we weren't allowed to correct it!
They were insanely stupid. Period.

The implication is that your claim to working for a publisher is as believable as your claims when you were were tolling before that you were a stressed out nurse. I know you thought you were smart enough to catch that, but then again maybe not.

It's hard to tell but I think King Troll is doing his worst yet again and is posing as this other person who actually works in publishing. I find his/her story and position rather believable. That stupid nurse stunt was clearly a stageplay, but this other person sounds legit.

Does anyone know where GM Mary Dillon is now?
I just want to make sure that when I'm applying to retail places, that she's at least a whole state away from me.

Re: Does anyone know where GM Mary Dillon is now?
For God's sake, she's only one woman and if you keep obsessing over her you'll end up as bonkers as she is!
(Anonymous) on September 1st, 2011 07:22 pm (UTC)
Re: Does anyone know where GM Mary Dillon is now?
This isn't obsession. I'm sorry, I worked for her at the Wareham store in Massachusetts and she made it a fucking horror show. Do you even know who I'm talking about? I never want to and CAN NOT see her again, because I'm afraid of what I might say or do.

Re: Does anyone know where GM Mary Dillon is now?
Yes, as a matter of fact, I worked for her myself. And I refuse to let her
win by constantly thinking of her. Let her go and move on with your life.

Re: Does anyone know where GM Mary Dillon is now?
you were obviously one of her sycophantic cronies, or probably some old windbag she counted on to do everything for her. I worked for her in Boston. the woman should be shot to death and disemboweled...slowly.
(Anonymous) on September 2nd, 2011 03:41 am (UTC)
Re: Does anyone know where GM Mary Dillon is now?
Wrong. I worked for her before either you or the person from Wareham did. In fact I worked for her longer than I think anyone else ever has. I've got
more stories about her than you'd believe. But I survived her and if the
person from Wareham needs to let it go. There's better things in life to spend time and energy on.

But just to let this person stop worrying, the last I heard she was at a
Borders on Long Island, NY.

Re: Does anyone know where GM Mary Dillon is now?
I worked for her in Wareham too and she's what I imagine Mussolini was to the Italian resistance...on the surface she was a strong leader, kind, and quite interesting, but after a few days with her you realize what a hack-job her entire personality is. I'm latino and I can tell you she was a racist; I'm a man and I can tell you she's a sexist, and I don't come from money and I can tell you she's a classist. And if there isn't a special place in hell for her, than there is no such thing as evil.

that just goes to tell us that you were her bitch. The only reason she didn't want to get rid of you was because you made her BR or CSI numbers look good or something.

Re: Does anyone know where GM Mary Dillon is now?
Oh well aren't you a martyr! Just because you set low standards for a boss and were a doormat for however long, doesn't mean you are some hearty survivor and can toot your horn so loudly. The woman had slaves, and you were one for not quitting, so get real.

Re: Does anyone know where GM Mary Dillon is now?
You know, there were many GM's in the company that were like Mary especially in the later years. The "good" ones had sense enough to leave or were asked to leave if they were "not on board". The new hired GM's were a new breed with different priorities than the store culture as it existed in the stores at the time.

I remember Mary in the district/regional meetings or calls and she was definitely a "kiss-up,outspoken company person.

Re: Does anyone know where GM Mary Dillon is now?
Speaking from experience, she was a loser, and she shamelessly stepped on everyone's toes during conference calls. Not to mention her ideas were never constructive.

Is Borders hiring?

I am looking for a job and was wondering if Borders is hiring? I have a local Borders in my neighborhood and I am seeing a huge kind of sale going on now. It seems like a really cool place to work.
The first question is: Do they hire full-time? is there insurance? what kind of hours do you get? and do you like your job?
I see the employment page when I type in Borders in Google. I think I am just going to apply now.
Any kind of feed-back would be welcomed. I have been looking for a job since last December and there are none. I worry about becoming homeless and don't own a computer.

thank you

Re: Is Borders hiring?
Hank, i'm not sure you're aware, but the company is shutting down in less than a month due to bankruptcy. The liquidators manage the stores now during the final closing sale, so it is possible to pick up temp work through them, you'd just have to either make an appointment to see one of them or show up at a store and ask to speak with him/her. Good luck.
