Borders Branded Stuff
So, any Borders branded stuff your gonna keep? Lanyards, Bags, copies of termination forms, whatever. Or are you just gonna chuck it all into the nearest Salvation Army Bin?

(NOTE: DC boxes don't count.)

At our wake for the downtown Boston store, one of the managers brought a bag of Borders balloons, which we blew up and then popped with our shredded Borders Rewards card. It was very cathartic.

Every Borders mug I had dripped coffee everywhere. Pissed me off then, makes me laugh now. Tossed out all the crap and kept only the good memories. RIP Borders.

I worked cafe, and somehow ended up with quite a few travel mugs. Unlike angrychicken's, mine all [surprisingly] still work fine. Except for the store mug that's actually shaped like a mug I got in 94. THAT one leaks and sloshes everywhere :D

I have my staff travel mug and a few t-shirts.
Most of all, I got me some memories - of terrific co-workers AND some of the worst managers and management decisions I've ever seen (seemed like Borders was a magnet for terrible managers). For a people oriented concern, the lack of people orientation was appalling.
The mug is ok, though, and the t-shirts are, well, t-shirts.

I got a Borders mousepad, my 15 year lanyard, a few assorted gift cards with the old designs from the early 2000's (the good years), a picture of a book that hung on the wall back in sci fi, and a copy of a mystery shop from the dark Marshall days to remind me of what bad leadership does to a company.. It was a 35, when the mystery shopper came in during a payroll slash and only 2 people were working...

I had a Borders-branded white tote that I was using to haul around some big-ass textbooks.
My cat threw up all over it on the day they announced final liquidation. Now I use a plain old shopping bag.

Box from my Store
I moved and I used our boxes from my store. It has my old store number on it with Borders name all over it. I think I'll always keep it!!

Tote bag
I have that red tote bag from a few years ago with the weird round pocket...a frisbee pocket?

No thanks...
I have no desire to have ANYTHING that would remotely remind me of Borders.

I was a trainer, so I have a cubic buttload of t-shirts, mugs, totes and other stuff packed away in a box (I quit 10 years ago and I suffer from packrat-itis). I also have some UK Borders items mixed in there, as I helped open the Glasgow store.

I left there less than a month short of my 10 year anniversary because I couldn't stand it anymore. Now that a lot of time has passed, I remember my time there more fondly than not and I'm still in touch with more than a few of my co-workers.

I don't think I'll be doing a purge of my Borders T-Shirts anytime soon. Some of them are back from the day when each store designed their own and there are some REALLY cool ones.
argillaceous_d on October 5th, 2011 07:12 pm (UTC)
Oh, I should mention...they're packed in a Harrisburg DC box!
(Anonymous) on October 7th, 2011 12:03 am (UTC)
Aww, I was going to ask if you had any generic multiple Borders t-shirts you'd be willing to part with for $$, but if they're mainly custom gems then I understand clinging to them. The only one I have I placed in a t-shirt frame.
argillaceous_d on October 7th, 2011 06:30 pm (UTC)
I might...as I said, they're packed away in a box and I don't remember exactly what I have.

Top team performance duffle bag! I'll use it until it breaks!

Borders crap
I worked on Borders.com and have some promotional mugs from when it launched in 1998. When most of the home office customer service staff was laid off (when Amazon took over), they got extra mugs. Nice, huh? That's how we got our set.

I have some CatMan crap packed up somewhere. I was on one of the category management teams. Cat Man looked like a Chester Cheetah ripoff.

When Titanic was released, we gave away miniature replicas of the jewel that the chick throws into the ocean. I have one of those somewhere.

Nabbed a few handfuls of Borders envelopes I'm planning to use as Christmas envelopes for those co-workers I've stayed in touch with.

Cafe Borders neon sign
I went by one of the old stores and noticed that the Cafe Espresso neon sign still in the window. Wonder how hard it would be to buy it from the landlord?

Re: Cafe Borders neon sign
Wow SBC sent guys out to take down the electric signs and all the letters. That should have been gone before liquidation started. Trademark logos.

A couple
There was one of the old Borders cafe mugs that sat behind Cash Wrap for all my time there, holding pens. Once I scrubbed it out, it is now my new coffee mug at B&N

I for some reason have my lanyard and ear phone combo hanging in my closet. It still has my harry potter Headmaster thingy on it, among others.

And on our last day I loaded a V cart into my car that the fixture vultures missed. I just moved cross country, so I gave it to my roommate, another borders guy, who uses it to move the comic book fixture he got, as we all know, moving that damn comic book fixture is impossible without a V cart.

I have some Borders Gift cards. Thankfully, no money left on them. Maybe I can sharpen the edges and use them as Ninja weapons?

Management got all the good stuff.

Someone in Madison listed their store's front doors on Craigslist.

I left with a picture of my GM, a classless beady-eyed yuppie cunt (from a Maine store). I've since copied the picture 365 times, and every morning before breakfast I light one of the copies on fire and watch it turn to ash. I'm hoping that one year later I will have channeled enough anger out of me to avoid therapy.

my lanyard, of course, as well as the employee handbook, and i somehow ended up with a giant wad of branded post-it notes. i only worked there for nine or ten months, though, so my collection is sadly limited.

I'll always treasure my Richard Marx "Fight for the Arts" Borders shirt. I think I got it in 1996 or so.

I have the oversized pair of scissors that was used for all the ribbon cutting ceremomies for new stores that opened. I now use them to trim the shrubs in my yard.

My cup, both of my lanyards, my BR card, and a few things that my staff saved for me (like my timecard for some random reason). Those were good times, worth remembering.

Cool t shirt from Hilo store
I visited Hawaii a few years ago and got a t-shirt when I stopped in to check out the Borders store there. The shirt is red with a flower design on the back which was especially designed for Borders. When I got back I wore it all the time when my GM was on vacation, but when she got back she made me stop wearing it. WTF?? Anyway, she was a humorless git who hated everything in the name of harmless fun.

I remember I started everybody going "Copy?" and "Do you copy?" and stuff like "that's an affirmative", etc. I guess I was in a NASA frame of mind. Anyway, we all were having a ball with it and it pissed her off really bad. (That's why we kept it up). We would have quit after a little while anyway, but she just couldn't give up being in total control. She hated me for stuff like that but I wasn't breaking any rules.

She got fired when Corporate swung the axe in December 2009. We thought "don't let the doorknob hit you in your flat shapeless flabby ass on the way out."

Mike Edwards kept/still uses his "Borders" logo Fleshlight.

I think all I've got is a great red tote bag with the Borders logo on it. It's lined with vinyl and is perfect for groceries. I was friends with the guy that did the corporate outreach at our store, and he'd give me some of the "good" stuff that was only meant for corporate customers. Don't know what I did with the umbrella, it was huge.

Those didn't last long, they had been used constantly by customers and the seats broke. I just saw them at Target for $75.

I still have my shirts with the BORDERS logo since the airport location employees wears uniforms. Like the ones LP wore. And a tote bag and a sweater. :-(

I kept the word "books" from the Waldenbooks letters on the wall. I am going to decoupage them in pages of old books and put them on the mantlepiece.
