Bounced paychecks
Anyone have a problem with their last check? I've already had to call payroll for one employee today. I wonder how many more times I will call today. It also makes me wonder about our next check...
(Anonymous) on February 18th, 2011 05:57 pm (UTC)
If we don't get our next check, I assume all of the Liquidated store staff will burn their respective establishments down. This is just absurd. I'm on direct deposit. Maybe this person waited to deposit their check until this week and it didn't clear? F**K Borders!
(Anonymous) on February 18th, 2011 08:05 pm (UTC)
You know what, we're working for the liquidators now and they have no loyalty to us. This is getting scary.
(Anonymous) on February 18th, 2011 05:58 pm (UTC)
Yes. It is happening
A part time employee from our store (which closed in Jan. 2011) had his last paycheck bounce.

I received a final check on 2-10 and cashed it right away. So far (knock on wood) no notice of a bounced check.

But the employee who waited with the check was stuck
with a bounced check.

Plenty of info in thread below this one
There is a lot of info towards the end of the thread below this one. It appears that when Borders filed their accounts were frozen.

Payroll is working with people whose checks bounced.

Here is the number to call.

Bouncing Bullsh*t
My check's been returned as well. I am now overdrawn. This is entirely unacceptable.

Re: Bouncing Bullsh*t
I am so glad they closed my walden store down last year. I now work at the public library. LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!

In response...
It depends on when you deposited your check and when it processed. It is my understanding that if you have direct deposit, you would've been fine. If you deposited a physical paycheck on Monday, your check probably bounced because the accounts somehow became frozen upon their bankruptcy filing that day. Stores are seeking approval for cash payouts for the affected employees and corporate is offering to reimburse any additional fees that may have posted to your account as a result of the bounced check - how long it will take is unknown. Check with your store manager or payroll and you should get the right answers.

Re: In response...
My coworker deposited her check before Monday (they didn't file Monday btw) and her check still hasn't gone through. Likewise, mine and another coworker's checks went through fine before Monday. Really odd.

From the thread below
Update: Procedure for Requesting a Reissued Check or Cash Advance
As announced yesterday, the Payroll Department is moving quickly to assist associates who have experienced problems depositing or cashing their most recent paycheck.

If a financial institution has chosen not to honor an associate’s most recent paycheck, he or she has two options:

1. Payroll will reissue the check and send it via FedEx to arrive at the associate’s store or home (their choice) tomorrow, Saturday, February 19. (Please note that the deadline for requesting Saturday delivery is 2 p.m. (Eastern) today. Reissue requests received after that time will arrive at the associate’s store or home on Tuesday, February 22.)
2. Payroll will authorize the associate’s manager to issue a cash advance.

In either instance, the associate’s manager should contact the Payroll Department at (800) 331-9036. To allow Payroll to begin processing the request immediately, please leave a message with the following information:

• The associate’s name
• Contact information
• Store number and employee ID number
• Which option the associate would prefer: a reissued check via FedEx or cash advance (if reissued check, please specify where the check should be sent)

For reissued check requests, please note that Payroll will not call back unless they have a question. For cash advance requests, Payroll will return the manager’s call with an authorization number and instructions for issuing the advance.

Again, Borders sincerely apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused and will reimburse any banking fees incurred as a result. Please fax a bank statement or other proof of the fees to (734) 477-4022 to request reimbursement in the associate’s next paycheck. Be sure to the associate’s name and employee ID number are clearly indicated on the fax.

Thank you for your continued understanding as we work quickly to resolve this problem!

Bounced checks
If the bounced paycheck caused you to bounce checks I would STRONGLY recommend you print out from Bookmark the above information and take it to your bank and show them this was not your fault.

Every bank can look at your account and one of the things that comes up under your account is an indicator that shows how many "returned itmes" you've deposited and how many times, if any, checks you've written weren't honored due to insufficient funds in your account.

It is simply smart management of your personal affairs to let your bank know that this wasn't your fault.

My paycheck bounced. They told me I could request a re-issued check( who is to say the next one won't bounce).

I was also told this process could take weeks to get a re-issued check. I need that money NOW!
(Anonymous) on February 18th, 2011 07:40 pm (UTC)
My check bounced on February 10. it is now 8 days later and I am STILL waiting for a replacement check.

That statement about FedEx overnight is BS and they're trying to stall.

Re: crap
bad thing is, I thought when mine bounced on Feb. 10 (actually the bounced check did not show up online until Monday the 14th), that it was probably some stupid corporate mistake. Now I know differently.
(Anonymous) on February 18th, 2011 07:43 pm (UTC)
I just checked my account and mine is overdrawn too because of a bounced check. I have been out of town and didn't even get to look at my online statement until today.

My electric payment bounced as a result. F*&^.
(Anonymous) on February 18th, 2011 07:48 pm (UTC)
Re: unbelievable
I would like to know if Borders corporate plans to reimburse us for returned check fees issued by companies as well as by banks. For example, my electric company has issued an NSF fee also.

It's not just the banks that parcel out NSF fees. help.

Concerned employee
What about next week's check? Am I going to have to worry about this every week until we go out of business?
(Anonymous) on February 18th, 2011 07:56 pm (UTC)
Re: Concerned employee
It's every man for himself. Borders has not told us the truth about how bad their financial situation is, and they owe us no loyalty.

I have worked here 12 years and this is not the Borders I knew.

what next
Looks like predictions that AA would screw
up the bankruptcy were dead on.

I wonder what else is
going to happen?

Re: what next
just hope the insurance lasts through the end of the month. After that we're on our own.

Call the Department of Labor in mass
I was lucky enough to have direct deposit and my acct was credited on the 10th, but I would advise everyone whose check bounced to call the Department of Labor if you do not receive checks via Fed-Ex tomorrow.

when is this liquidation actually starting?
Employees at our store have been given no specific day and we are frustrated............
(Anonymous) on February 18th, 2011 09:39 pm (UTC)
Re: when is this liquidation actually starting?
If you read the Chapter 11 filing, it is intended to begin tomorrow. I am a little surprised that corporate is not doing more to prepare the store affected. You would have thought that a sign package of some sort would have landed by today with some instructions on deploying it Saturday morning. Have any of the closing stores had visits from Hilco representatives?
